The Alibi (a short scene)

A short scene of two friends who are no longer allowed to see each other coming up with an alibi of their weekend.

The Alibi

Joey Coleman

Scene starts with IRENE sitting at her desk writing in her bedroom when CODY races in. IRENE is a quiet and rational person who attempts to have fun but never really gets there. She’s also a bit of a tom-boy and prefers to hang out with boys than girls. She was out with CODY over the weekend at a camping trip with some friends after CODY persuaded her to go. CODY is very impulsive and rash and he doesn’t tend to think things through until after the fact. The two have been best friends since they were kids but are now banned from seeing each other by IRENE S mom because of a quarrel they had a few years ago where IRENE got injured due to CODY’S actions. IRENE has not told her mother about his weekend.

CODY (rushing in through the door): Dude! I totally fixed your problem!

IRENE: I had a problem?

CODY: About last weekend.

IRENE: Cody, look, will you just shut up about it? Nobody has to tell my mom that we—wait a minute, how did you get in here?

CODY: Through the window near your back door.

IRENE (mortified): You broke into my home?!

CODY: Relax; there was no “breaking” involved. But next time, maybe leave your back door unlocked.

IRENE: What do you want Cody?

CODY: I told you! I fixed your problem! I have figured out three air tight alibis as to where you were over the weekend.

IRENE: I was with you—

CODY: No, that’s not one of the explanations. You can’t tell your mom that because were technically not allowed to hang out anymore.

IRENE: But we do!

CODY: But she doesn’t know that. (He gestures towards the door)

IRENE (sighs): I know I’m going to regret this, but what are your alibis Cody?

CODY (whips out a pad of paper and a pen from his pocket): Alibi number one! You weren’t home over the weekend because you took a spontaneous trip to Peru!

IRENE: Peru?

CODY: You think it should be Cuba, don’t you? I’ll change it. (He scribbles on the notepad) Alibi number two! You were out for the weekend with a gentleman friend- now I know this sounds iffy, but I have successfully convinced Matthew Collins to agree to tell your mother that you spent Friday night out at the local circus where a monkey wearing a small hat and a tiny vest harassed you. Saturday, you spent watching the full trilogy of The Lord of the Rings. Then you came home well rested Sunday evening after spending the day shopping with Matthew as he helped you pick out dresses for the upcoming dance. By the way- you’re going to the upcoming dance with Matthew.

IRENE: Matthew Collins?

CODY: Correct.

IRENE: Can’t we just say nothing to my mom?

CODY: Silence is the admittance of defeat, Irene.

IRENE: Okay… so what’s the last plan?

CODY (he flips in his notepad): Alibi number three! You were kidnapped on Friday evening after resisting the theft of your purse and were brutally tortured by two thugs who held you tied up in an abandoned warehouse until you begged hard enough that they felt sympathy for you and let you go.

IRENE: Brutally tortured.

CODY: Yes.

IRENE: Okay, if I was brutally tortured, where are all my bruises and scrapes?

CODY (looks IRENE over): Good point… You were kidnapped and had a stern talking to—

IRENE: Oh my God, Cody! These plans don’t make any sense! Look, I know you are trying to get me to have more fun in my life, but why can’t we just tell my mom the truth about what happened over the weekend?

The phone rings. IRENE ignores it.

CODY: I’m sorry, but are you going to get that?

IRENE: My mom will grab it downstairs. Look, Cody, I’ll tell my mom that we’ve been hanging out and I’ll try to reason with her, (The phone stops ringing, indicating IRENE’S mother picked it up downstairs) but until then, you have to stop trying to create these elaborate stories—

IRENE’S MOTHER (from downstairs in a very angry tone): He did what?! IRENE!!

IRENE looks at the door then frighteningly at CODY.

IRENE (quickly): So Peru, huh?

Blackout.
